Other Academic Programs
Caltech offers academic opportunities that do not lead to a degree from
the institute. These opportunities are designed to compliment and expand
the educational and professional goals of individuals.

An exchange
program has been established with the Scripps Institution of
Oceanography (SIO), University of California, San Diego, permitting
Caltech graduate students to enroll in and receive credit for
graduate courses offered by SIO. Arrangements should be made
through the student’s
major option and the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies. The
student must obtain the advance approval of the instructors of
courses to be taken at SIO.In some cases, when it is in the best
interests of the student, arrangements may be made for the student
to be temporarily in full-time residence at SIO.
Thesis research done partly at SIO may be arranged directly
by the student’s option and the staff of appropriate research
laboratories at SIO, without the necessity of enrolling for SIO
courses designated for research; in this case the student will
continue to be under the supervision of his or her Caltech thesis
adviser and will enroll for Caltech research units. |

Caltech's GradPreview program aims to increase the representation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Latino, and Native American) in science and engineering graduate programs, and make Caltech's programs more visible to additional students not traditionally exposed to Caltech. The program is rooted in Caltech's commitment and desire to attract and train a diverse set of science, engineering, and technology leaders. The three-day visitation program offers high-achieving undergraduates interested in graduate study and summer research in astronomy, biology, engineering, chemistry, geological and planetary science, mathematics, physics, or the applied sciences the opportunity to explore these fields at Caltech. The visit includes interacting with faculty and students, lab tours, and seminars about graduate study and summer research.

Caltech employees, both campus
and JPL, are eligible to apply to
take one or more graduate courses for credit. Participants in this
program will not be considered to be working toward a Caltech
degree, in contrast to the part-time program for graduate degrees
described above, and courses taken under this program cannot be
used to fulfill the requirements for a Caltech degree. Please consult
the current Caltech Catalog for more information. |
To find out more about graduate degrees refer to the current Caltech
Catalog.
